Fifth Class

22-June-25

This term we have learned poetry in English. We have learned lots of different styles of poetry including haiku, couplet and acrostic. We wrote two to three Haiku’s. Haiku is three lines with five syllables in the first and last line and seven syllables in the middle line. It can be completely made up and doesn’t have to rhyme, but it has to be based on a topic for example

Autumn

Leaves will be falling,

Watch the beautiful colours.

Autumn is now here.

We wrote couplets as well. A couplet is two lines that rhyme for example;

We went to the beach,

And got an ice-cream to eat.

We also wrote acrostic poems. Acrostic is where you write a word down the side of the page and you start off the sentences with the letters down the side. It doesn’t have to rhyme but it can if you want.

Our comprehension strategy this term was visualising and making connections. We also did some onomatopoeia art and we finished our class novel ‘The War of Jenkins Ear’. We also did some Kahoot on the novel.

This term we did 3-D shapes. We learned about their properties. We made our own 3-D shapes using nets. We learned about the circle and did circle art and a circle trail outside. We also learned about spatial awareness and explored reading and plotting co-ordinates, using the compass and using scales.

In Irish we learned about Sa Bhaile, Éadaí agus Siopadóireacht. We have worked a lot on our verbs and we are past and present tense experts.

In history we learned about the french, american and irish revolution. We also learned about how the French threw the tea overboard off one of the British ships as a protest against all of the unnecessary tea taxes they had to pay. We also learned about the Irish Revolution that started in 1919. We compared all the differences and similarities between the three revolutions. One more thing that we learned in history was the change in transport over time. We learned how feet became shoes, then horse ‘n’ cart, then it finally became the first type of car and how the first car changed over time to become the modern model that it is today. We also have all started to do a history project on important events and inventions that changed the world forever, such as the development of fashion and mobile phones, as well as the history of the GAA and of course famous events such as the Famine and the Stone age, Bronze age and both the word wars.

Looking after the environment was our main focus in Geography this term, we helped out with the green schools and did a quiz on what to do for our environment and how important it is to look after it. We also did a sheet on all the counties in Ireland and coloured in all their flag colours. In science, we learned about photosynthesis and how a plant needs water, sun, and plenty of space to grow. We also learned about all the different organs in the human body. From skin, to the heart and lungs.

In art this term we did our Summer art in which we all picked a scene to do with summer and drew it. Some of us did an ocean or beach scene, while others drew their favorite Summer treat!

In our Earth art project we were given a piece of the Earth, and we had to change it into something else such as the chocolate sauce on top of an ice-cream or the mixture in a bowl. Some of us even drew the rest of the world, along with the bit we’d already got. We also did the Green schools competition, the winner in our class drew a picture of our Earth with hands holding on to each other, to show that we all need to work together to make the world a better place. Another piece of art that we did this term was our recollection of David Smith's sculpture art. David Smith was a man who designed abstract art pieces. Our job was to get a coloured piece of paper and then cut out bits of black paper to stick onto it. Some people created the silhouette of a person or thing, while others went random like David Smith himself and did an abstract piece of art.

To end the year on a high, we went to Croke Park, then Jump Zone for our school tour. It was a very educational and fun experience and both 5th and 6th class thoroughly enjoyed it.

In Croke Park we went to the museum, where we looked at the first hurls and jerseys and our tour guide told us how women weren’t allowed to play the sports at first and how they had to wear really long skorts. We also went to the players lounge where all the players can eat and relax after games. We were also allowed to go into the dressing rooms where all the jerseys were hung up on the walls, and all the All-Ireland winning counties were put up on top in honour of them. We also went into the Hogan stand and our guide told us about all the stands and how they got their names. At the end we were all given ten minutes to browse in the gift shop.

Then we went to Jump Zone where there were loads of obstacles, beams, walls and of course trampolines! We all loved it! It was so much fun to jump over obstacles and play dodge ball in the designated areas. Even the teachers joined in too! On the way home we stopped at Killcullen and refreshed at Mc Donalds and the Deli. We all loved our school tour and would recommend it to anybody who likes a bit of craic!

We have been working on our Creative Cluster project and we have added the benches and bunting to the courtyard. We have sat our in the courtyard reading and we are impressed with our outdoor classroom. Ada’s Dad is making an easel over the summer and we will be making the legacy poster with the artistic next year.

Third to sixth class learned songs and practiced with Ms. Kenny for the choir for the first holy communion. At the end of the choir Ms.Kenny kindly gives us an ice pop and a homework pass for being part of the school choir. On the day of the communion we all had a really good time.

As we went on with the year we learned more and more about drumming with Tom. He taught us so much, body percussion and with the drums. We used a lot of instruments like the rebaneic, hand drum, tambarine, serdu, and shaker. We played lots of body percussion games and they were our favourite.

This term in PE we did table tennis, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, ultimate frisbee, parachute and tennis. In “table tennis” we played matches inside on the tables. In “soccer" we did drills such as dribbling through cones, passing the ball, penalties and matches outside. In “Basketball" we did matches outside. In “Gymnastics” we did handstands, cartwheels and stretches. In “Ultimate Frisbee” we played matches and learned the rules of the game. In “Parachute” we put dodge balls on the Parachute and tried to get them off and went under it. In “tennis” we passed the ball and play spike ball.

We have won lots of camogie, football and hurling games this term. The boys won the mini 7’s double which has only been done twice before. We won the under 11’s final in hurling. We won lots of medals as a school and in our class for our swimming gala. The boys won the relay and the girls came second, and with all the medals combined the boys won overall best team and the girls came second. The girls camogie team also got to the shield final.
