We can’t believe it’s already March in 5th Class! Time is going so quick and we have been working really hard!
We celebrated Engineers Week back at the beginning of March. We were very lucky and grateful to have two guest speakers come in and talk to us. We learned about the work some engineers carry out to ensure our water is clean and filtered properly and also how other engineers work to come up with ways of making our homes and businesses around Ireland more renewable in clever ways.

We then worked as Engineers and put our thinking caps on. We worked in groups to design and make our very own bridge, which had to be longer than 60cm and made with only recyclable materials. The bridge had to be strong enough to hold the weight of a few classroom materials chosen by the teacher. We used cardboard, paper, lollipop sticks, straws, tape and newspaper. All bridges were very different and very creative and each one passed the test!

We had great fun celebrating World Book Day and getting to dress up as characters from our favourite books. 5th Class included Willy Wonkas, soccer players, Kilkenny hurlers, jockeys, Coralines, Wednesday Addams and Dalmations, to name but a few! We shared our favourite books with each other and completed some fun activities. We also got the lovely opportunity to read snippets from our favourite books to 1st and 2nd class and listen to them read too.

A huge congratulations to Conor Hoyne from our class who represented the school in the Eason Spelling Bee County Final in Gowran on the 7th of March. He received great support on the day from MJ and Rory who came along too. He did extremely well and we are all very proud of him. Well done Conor!

We were very busy preparing for Peace Proms in school since January and the big day finally arrived on the 10th of March when we got to showcase our singing and moves in the SETU Arena in Waterford. It was a wonderful day out and we had lots of fun!

Well done to the girls from our class who represented the school at the FAI Schools Soccer League on the 13th of March. They had a very enjoyable day out in Thomastown.

There was lots of excitement around the school this week to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge. We got to do some Irish Dancing with Ms Garrahy, played lots of Irish games in class, sang some Irish songs, taught 1st and 2nd class some new Irish vocabulary, completed some artwork and most importantly, we really made a huge effort to speak even more Irish every day. We really enjoyed performing in the Ceolchoirm on Friday. We sang ‘Shotgun’ as Gaeilge as well as ‘Trasna na dTonnta’. We are all looking forward to Saint Patrick’s Day this Sunday.
