3rd and 4th Class Blog
It has been a very busy start to the school year for 3rd and 4th class!
We have been working together to learn all about Earth’s place in space and the Space Race between the USA and USSR. Did you know that Earth is suitable for human life because it sits in an area of space called the Goldilock’s Zone? This area is neither too hot nor too cold to sustain life- it is just right!
We have also learned all about some of the less known figures behind NASA’s success- the female ‘human computers’ .Their role was so vital that astronaut John Glenn didn’t trust an electronic computer to check all the data and calculations for his space flight and he insisted that one of the ‘human computers’ Katherine Johnsons checked all the information by hand before he travelled into space!

Our teacher taught us how to use the Book Creator app and we have been working on creating our own space themed ebooks. We have also enjoyed using the chromebooks to take part in interactive class Kahoot quizzes where we worked in pairs to test our knowledge against our classmates.
We carried our space theme i to Art where we created our own ‘Trippy Space Men’ art and learned about positive and negative space when creating our own drawings of space. In October we moved on to working with oil pastels to draw Halloween pumpkins.

In SPHE we have started to work on the FRIENDS For Life programme where we will learn all about emotional resilience and dealing with positive and negative emotions. We are also learning relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and meditation.
In PE we spent September working on outdoor and adventure skills and orienteering. We had fun making and trying to follow maps- let’s just say some of us have a better sense of direction than others! As well as this lots of our class were involved in the school hurling and football teams, as well as the school cross country team. We also had great fun taking part in the school’s annual Pink Run.
