The New Year is in full swing in the Junior Infant room. We have busy continuing to learn our phonics and sight words and we are now enjoying beginning to read and write words! We have even started Power Hour Literacy Stations with the help of Ms Dowling and Mrs Drennan. We have handwriting, phonics, CVC words and fine motor stations, where we play games and use magnetic letters and whiteboards to practise our literacy skills. Soon we will be adding a Decodable Reader station too.

Over the past few months, we have been exploring the genre “Writing to Socialise” in English. We have written letters to Santa and made Get Well cards. We have read lots of stories with examples of this genre in them for example “Call 999” and “Dear Father Christmas” by Alan Durant.

We really enjoyed performing for our Grandparents on Grandparent’s Day as part of Catholic Schools Week. We made portraits of our Grandparents for the Halla and we said a poem with actions for our Grandparents.

In Aistear, we have been exploring the themes of The Market and The Vet. We have also been learning about Africa and all the different animals that live in Africa. Heather from the Dogs Trust also came to visit us to teach us how to be “Dog Safe”, by showing us how to act safely around dogs at home and out in the community. Thanks Heather!

In Maths, we have been learning to combine sets together and to represent and sort data in a number of different ways. We made pictograms and now we are learning to write the numbers 1 and 2.
Now that spring is here, we decided to paint a communal Spring Mural for our wall. We loved painting colourful spring flowers. We also created Pointillism Rainbows and learned all the colours of the rainbow.

Caoimhe comes to Church Hill to teach us gymnastics on Thursdays. We have been learning to balance, travel across the mats in a variety of ways and now we are even learning how to do a handstand! It is great fun.
