Second Class

2nd Class Blog – March 2026

The term between Christmas and Easter has been an incredibly busy one filled with sport, subject weeks, First Penance, cake sales, dress up days and lots of learning mixed in!

We continued our GAA lessons with Liam, focusing on Gaelic Football skills. We then began our swimming lessons in the Watershed. We attend weekly lessons along with 3rd class and 4th class. Everyone is enjoying the break from the classroom while learning and honing some vital life skills.

As part of our commitment to upkeep and renewal of the Active Schools Flag, we took part in the Croke Park Movement Breaks Challenge. As these movement breaks were filmed in and around Croke Parks, the children got a behind-the-scenes look at where the team buses arrive, inside the players’ dressing rooms and warm up areas where legends get game ready. We committed to participating in these movement breaks every day for 4 weeks between January and February.

Also between January and February we celebrated Catholic Schools week, Grandparents Day and the children enjoyed the cake sale organised by the Parents Committee. Some children in 2nd class received the Sacrament of Reconciliation organised by Fr. Hennessy. They were excellently prepared for this sacrament by Ms. Dowling. The children are enjoying our visits from Fr. Hennessy and are attending monthly masses in preparation for their First Holy Communion.

The month of March has given us many reasons to celebrate. Apart from the welcomed change in weather and signs of Spring, we have actively been embracing Engineers Week, World Book Day and Seachtain na Gaeilge. 2nd class loved recreating famous natural and manmade landmarks and structures using materials in our classroom. For World Book Day, we were so lucky to have a visitor from the Mayfair Library, we dressed up as our favourite characters from books, partook in quizzes and competitions and redesigned book covers.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is a highlight every year and this year didn’t fail expectations with the children joining up with older classes for buddy reading as Gaeilge, a competition to design a poster for the seanfhocal ‘Is olc an ghaoth nach séideann maitheas do dhuine éigin’ (Every cloud has a silver lining), céilí dancing – we learnt Shoe the Donkey, An Dreoilín, and the Siege of Ennis; and everyone’s favourite Lá Glas where the children wowed Church Hill in their best green outfits!
