Green Schools

This year’s Green Schools Committe- Elsie, Sean, Emilie, Philip, Fiadh, Harry, Kimberley, Luke, Cara, Tiernan and Lee- have had a very busy year. We set up a traffic light system to monitor litter and waste in the school and to ensure that each class is sorting their bins correctly. We monitor the bins on a regular basis and have been giving certificates to the classes who are doing the best job of managing their waste correctly. We’ve also been monitoring our school energy usage as part of our work towards our next green flag.

This year we also set up a Returns Scheme in the school. We managed to raise almost €80 and used all the funds raised to buy plants, pots and decorations for our school and garden.

In December Craig Benton from the Composting for Schools Programme visited the school to conduct an environmental audit and to work with John and Ms. Garrahy on devising an action plan for our school. Craig returned on June 5th to help us set up our new school wormery and leaf mould cages. Craig taught us all about worms and composting and how to manage our wormery. Our wormery is home to approximately 500 worms who we will feed using fruit and vegetable waste from our school. Within the next few months we should produce some really good quality compost that we can use in our garden.
