Sport plays a huge part in life in Church Hill NS. Please take a look at a selection of some of
the sports on offer in Church Hill below.
GAA
A dedicated and enthusiastic approach by the staff and students alike has ensured that Gaelic
Games has flourished in our school for many years. The great attention and detail to the
training and coaching of under- age teams has resulted in the school contesting numerous
county finals and enjoying considerable success. Gaelic Football takes place between
September and Christmas, while hurling takes place from February to June. Church Hill NS
teams up with Danesfort NS and Burnchurch NS for GAA.
Camogie
Like hurling in Church Hill NS, camogie takes place from February to June under the
guidance of very dedicated staff. All girls from 3 rd – 6 th class are encouraged to take part. We
are very fortunate that we can use the brilliant facilities in Danesfort GAA.
FAI Soccer
The SPAR FAI Primary School 5-a-side is a competition hosted by FAI Schools, which is an
affiliate of the FAI. The 5-a-side is the most popular primary schools sporting event in the
soccer calendar. The hugely popular competition is open to boys and girls in 4th, 5th and 6th
class from primary schools across Ireland. Church Hill NS enters teams in both the boys and
girls sections.
The competition is organized on a county, regional and provincial basis with the chance to
represent your province in the Aviva stadium.
Swimming
The school has access to ‘The Watershed’ swimming pool in Kilkenny each year. All
children from 3 rd – 6 th class take part in our aquatics programme. The swimming gala is held
every June for primary school children in Kilkenny. Each year Church Hill NS has
representatives in both the boys and girls sections.
Volleyball
Church Hill NS has a strong tradition of volleyball in the school. We have won numerous
All-Ireland volleyball titles, the most recent in 2016. Both boys and girls from 5 th and 6 th
classes are given the opportunity to take part. This year our local volleyball competition takes
place in the Watershed in February.
Basketball
Our Basketball Club gives the opportunity to develop the children’s knowledge, skill and
understanding of the sport. Sessions are delivered by a group of teachers who have a passion for the sport and are vastly experienced. The club encourages development in social, technical and physical aspects of basketball for all who attend.
Tag Rugby
Tag rugby sessions are delivered by a qualified coach from Leinster rugby. All classes are
given the opportunity to take part in these lessons.
